What is AMITIZA Lubiprostone? AMITIZA is a prescription medicine for adults used to treat chronic idiopathic constipation. It is a small, soft, orange, oval gelatin capsule. Chronic idiopathic constipation means that for 3 months or more you have had infrequent bowel movements or difficulty passing stools. Idiopathic means that cause of the constipation is not known and not due to underlying illness or medication. The signs and symptoms associated with chronic idiopathic constipation may result from difficulty passing stools through the bowels. They may include straining, hard or lumpy stools, abdominal bloating and discomfort, feeling like your bowel is never completely empty, feeling like there is something blocking your bowel, and and generally fewer than 3 bowel movements a week. Who should not take AMITIZA? Do not take Amitiza if: ? You have a history of or have ever had a bowel obstruction. ? You are pregnant, unless, after discussion with your doctor, the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. ? You have severe diarrhea. ? You are allergic to AMITIZAs ingredients (Lubirostone). What should I tell my doctor before and while taking AMITIZA? AMITIZA is not for everyone. You should talk to your doctor if you: ? Have been told you may have a bowel obstruction. ? Have kidney or liver disease. ? Are pregnant, or are planning on becoming pregnant, or are breastfeeding. ? Cannot swallow a capsule. How should I take AMITIZA? AMITIZA needs to be taken twice a day, or as prescribed by your doctor. AMITIZA should be taken with food or a meal. Swallow the gelatin capsule whole. What are the possible side effects of AMITIZA? The most common side effects reported by people taking AMITIZA included nausea, diarrhea, and headache. The incidence of nausea increased when there was also a increase in the dose of AMITIZA taken in one day. Long-term use of AMITIZA does not make you more likely to experience nausea. Tell your doctor if you experience nausea. Diarrhea is a side effect of treatment with AMITIZA. If your diarrhea becomes severe, stop taking AMITIZA immediately and tell your doctor. If you get diarrhea during treatment and it worsens, stop taking AMITIZA and consult your physician.
